Question
At 298 K, a certain buffer solution contains equal concentrations of $X^{-}$and $HX,K_{b}$ for $X^{-}$is $10^{- 10}$. What is the pH of this buffer solution?
Options
A.2
B.4
C.6
D.10
Solution
Sol. [Key Concept: Basic buffer — pOH = pKb + log([salt]/[base])]
$HX \rightleftharpoons H^{+} + X^{-}$
$${K_{a} \times K_{b} = K_{w} }{K_{a} = \frac{K_{w}}{K_{b}} = \frac{10^{- 14}}{10^{- 10}} = 10^{- 4} }{pH = {pK}_{a} + log\frac{\left\lbrack X^{-} \right\rbrack}{\lbrack HX\rbrack} }$$Given that : $\lbrack X - \rbrack = \lbrack HX\rbrack$
$$= 4 + log(1) $$= 4 + 0
= 4
