Question
Concentrated nitric acid, upon long standing, turns yellow-brown due to the formation of -
Options
A.NO
B.NO2
C.N2O
D.N2O4
Solution
Conc. HNO3 decomposes partly on long standing in light as follows :
2HNO3 → H2O + 2NO2 + 1/2 O2
This NO2 gets dissolved in remaining HNO3 and turns its colour yellow-brown which is due to the paramagnetic behaviour of NO2.
2HNO3 → H2O + 2NO2 + 1/2 O2
This NO2 gets dissolved in remaining HNO3 and turns its colour yellow-brown which is due to the paramagnetic behaviour of NO2.
