Question
The EMF of cell: H2(g)|Buffer||Normal calomel electrode, is 0.70 V at 25°C, when barometric pressure is 760 mm. What is the pH of the buffer solution? E°Calomel = 0.28 V. [2.303 RT/F = 0.06]
Options
A.3.5
B.7.0
C.tending to zero
D.tending to 14.0
Solution
$E_{cell} = E_{cell}^{o} - \frac{0.06}{n}.\log\frac{\left\lbrack H^{+} \right\rbrack^{2}}{P_{H_{2}}}$
Or, $0.70 = (0.28 - 0) - \frac{0.06}{2}.\log\frac{\left\lbrack H^{+} \right\rbrack^{2}}{1} \Rightarrow P^{H} = 7.0$
