Question
The enthalpy change involved in the oxidation of glucose is −2880 kJ/mol. Twenty five per cent of this energy is available for muscular work. If 100 kJ of muscular work is needed to walk 1 km, what is the maximum distance that a person will be able to walk after eating 120 g of glucose?
Options
A.19.2 km
B.9.6 km
C.2.4 km
D.4.8 km
Solution
Heat released from 120 gm glucose $= \frac{2880}{180} \times 120 = 1920\text{ kJ}$
$\therefore$ Distance $\frac{1920}{100} \times \frac{25}{100} = 4.8\text{ km}$
