Chemical EquilibriumHard

Question

At –10oC, the solid compound Cl2(H2O)8 is in equilibrium with gaseous chlorine, water vapour and ice. The partial pressure of the two gases in equilibrium with a mixture of Cl2(H2O)8 and ice are 0.20 atm for Cl2 and 0.001 atm for water vapour. The processes may be represented as follows.

(i) Cl2(H2O)8(s) $\rightleftharpoons$Cl2(g) + 8H2O(g); KP1 (ii) Cl2(H2O)8(s) $\rightleftharpoons$Cl2(g) + 8H2O(s); KP2

Identify the correct statement among the following regarding the processes.

Options

A.The value of KP1 is 2.0 × 10–25 atm9.
B.The value of KP2 is 0.2 atm.
C.The vapour pressure of ice is 0.001 atm at 263 K
D.Process (i) must be exothermic.

Solution

$K_{P_{2}} = P_{Cl_{2}(g)} = 0.2\text{ atm}$

$K_{P_{1}} = P_{Cl_{2}(g)}.P_{H_{2}O(g)}^{8} = 0.2 \times (0.001)^{8}\text{=2} \times \text{1}\text{0}^{- 25}\text{ at}\text{m}^{9}$

$P_{H_{2}O(g)}$= Vapour pressure of ice.
