Question
A compound of iron and chlorine is soluble in water. An excess of silver nitrate was added to precipitate all chloride ions as silver chloride. If a 127 mg sample of the compound gave 287 mg AgCl, then what is the formula of the compound? (Fe = 56, Ag = 108)
Options
A.FeCl2
B.FeCl3
C.FeCl
D.FeCl6
Solution
$FeCl_{x} + xAgNO_{3} \rightarrow xAgCl \downarrow + Fe\left( NO_{3} \right)x$
(56 + 35.5x)g x × 143.5 g
∴ 127 mg $\frac{143.5x}{56 + 35.5x} \times 127 = 287 \Rightarrow x = 2$
