JEE Main Time Management: Complete 3-Hour Exam Strategy

jee main

With 90 questions in 3 hours, you have 2 minutes per question. Effective time management in JEE Main can easily be worth 20-30 extra marks. Here is a battle-tested 3-hour strategy.

Recommended Subject Order

Option A (Chemistry first): Chemistry (45 min) → Physics (70 min) → Maths (65 min). Advantage: Chemistry is fastest — completing it quickly builds confidence. Option B (Strength first): Start with your strongest subject. Both work if practiced consistently.

Section A: The 2-Minute Rule

Read each MCQ once. If you know it immediately: solve (30-90 sec) and mark. If you need thinking: attempt it, mark for review, move on. Never spend more than 3 minutes on any single MCQ the first pass.

Section B: Numerical Strategy

You attempt 5 of 10 NVQs. Scan all 10 first (2 minutes). Pick the 5 that look most familiar/straightforward. Double-check numerical answers — no partial credit and -1 for wrong.

Review Pass Protocol

With 15-20 minutes remaining: Return to all "marked for review" questions. Attempt any you can now. Re-check your numerical answers for arithmetic errors. Do not change MCQ answers based on gut feel.

Stress Management During Exam

Seeing a hard question does not mean you are failing. Skip and move on — the exam has easy and hard questions intentionally. Breathe deeply between subjects. If feeling anxious, close eyes for 10 seconds and reset.
