JEE Main Chemistry: Important Topics and Weightage (2026)

jee main

Chemistry is the most scoring subject in JEE Main if you approach it right. With strong NCERT reading and targeted practice, you can score 80-90 marks in Chemistry alone.

Physical Chemistry (High Weightage)

Chemical Equilibrium, Electrochemistry, Thermodynamics, and Chemical Kinetics together account for 8-10 questions. These require conceptual understanding and formula application. Master mole concept first — it underlies most Physical Chemistry.

Organic Chemistry (Moderate-High)

Organic Chemistry is 12-14 questions. Focus on Named Reactions (Aldol, Cannizzaro, Hofmann), IUPAC nomenclature, and GOC (electronic effects, resonance). Biomolecules and Polymers are 2-3 direct questions — mostly factual.

Inorganic Chemistry (Direct from NCERT)

P-block, d-block, and Coordination Compounds are 8-10 questions. 90% of Inorganic JEE Main questions are directly from NCERT text and examples. Read NCERT Class 11 and 12 Chemistry NCERT 3 times minimum.

NCERT is Non-Negotiable

Unlike Physics and Maths, you cannot skip NCERT for Chemistry. Every in-text question and example in NCERT Chemistry has appeared in JEE Main. Annotate your NCERT and revise regularly.

Best Strategy for Chemistry

Spend 30 minutes daily on NCERT Chemistry reading. Solve 20-30 PYQ Chemistry questions every week. Aim to complete Chemistry in under 45 minutes during the exam, saving time for Physics and Maths.
