JEE Main Physics: Important Topics with Chapter-wise Weightage (2026)

jee main

Physics is often the deciding subject in JEE Main. Knowing which chapters carry the most marks lets you prioritize effectively and score more in less time.

High Weightage Topics (4-5 questions)

Electrodynamics (Current Electricity, EMI, AC Circuits) consistently has 4-5 questions. Mechanics (Laws of Motion, Work-Energy, Rotational Motion) has 4-5 questions. Modern Physics (Photoelectric Effect, Atoms, Nuclei) has 3-4 questions.

Medium Weightage Topics (2-3 questions)

Optics (Ray + Wave) typically has 3 questions. Thermodynamics and Kinetic Theory carry 2-3 questions. Waves and Oscillations contribute 2-3 questions per paper.

Class 11 vs Class 12 Split

Historically 45-50% of Physics questions come from Class 11. Do not neglect Class 11 Mechanics — it is foundational and high-scoring. Class 12 Electrodynamics is the single largest chunk.

Numerical Value Questions (NVQs)

Section B has 5 NVQs where you attempt any 5 of 10. These are often easier than MCQs but require accurate calculation. Practice dimensional analysis and order-of-magnitude estimation.

Formula Sheet Strategy

Build a one-page formula sheet per chapter. Revise it weekly. For JEE Main, formula recall under pressure is critical — especially for Electricity and Magnetism.
