JEE Main Class 11 vs Class 12 Weightage: Complete Analysis

jee main

Many students neglect Class 11 in the rush to complete Class 12 syllabus. This is a costly mistake — Class 11 contributes nearly half of all JEE Main questions. Here is the exact distribution across all three subjects.

Overall Distribution

Physics: Class 11 ~45%, Class 12 ~55%. Chemistry: Class 11 ~45%, Class 12 ~55%. Mathematics: Class 11 ~50%, Class 12 ~50%. Lesson: You cannot afford to neglect either class in any subject.

Physics: Class 11 Critical Chapters

Class 11 Mechanics (Laws of Motion, Work-Energy, Rotation) is 4-5 questions alone. Thermal Physics (Kinetic Theory, Thermodynamics) is 2-3 questions. These are Class 11 chapters with among the highest JEE Main frequency.

Chemistry: Class 11 Must-Do Chapters

Class 11: Some Structure of Atom, Chemical Bonding, States of Matter, Thermodynamics, Equilibrium, Hydrogen, and s-block elements. These contribute ~10 questions total. The Equilibrium chapter alone is 2-3 questions in most papers.

Mathematics: Class 11 vs 12 Balance

Class 11 Maths: Sets, Relations, Trigonometry, Complex Numbers, Permutation-Combination, Binomial Theorem — about 7-8 questions. Class 12: Calculus dominates (8-9 questions). Both halves are equally important.

Study Plan Implication

Do not treat Class 12 Boards as your only JEE preparation. When studying for Boards, simultaneously add JEE depth to those chapters. Never skip Class 11 chapters even if Boards don't test them rigorously.
