Question
Sr2+ forms a very unstable complex with NO3−. A solution that was 0.001 M-Sr(ClO4)2 and 0.05 M-KNO3 was found to have only 75% of its strontium in the uncomplexed Sr2+ form, the balance being Sr(NO3)+. What is the value of Kf for complexation?
Options
A.6.67
B.0.15
C.60
D.26.67
Solution
$Sr^{2 +} + NO_{3}^{-} \rightleftharpoons Sr\left( NO_{3} \right)^{+}$
0.001 M 0.05 M 0
Eqn. 0.001 – x 0.05 – x x
$= 0.001 \times \frac{75}{100}$ =0.05 M
∴ x = 0.00025
Now, $K_{f} = \frac{2.5 \times 10^{- 4}}{7.5 \times 10^{- 4} \times 0.05} = \frac{20}{3}$
