Question
Magnesium hydroxide is the white milky substance in milk of magnesia. What mass of Mg(OH)2 is formed when 15 ml of 0.2 M-NaOH is combined with 12 ml of 0.15 M-MgCl2?
Options
A.0.087 g
B.0.079 g
C.0.1044 g
D.0.522 g
Solution
$n_{eq}\text{ of NaOH = }\frac{15 \times 0.2}{1000} \times 1 = 3 \times 10^{- 3}$
$n_{eq}\text{ of MgC}\text{l}_{2}\text{ = }\frac{12 \times 0.15}{1000} \times 2 = 3.6 \times 10^{- 3}$
Hence, NaOH is a limiting reagent.
Now, the mass of Mg(OH)2 formed = 3 × 10–3 × 29 = 0.087 g.
