Question
If the yield of chloroform obtainable from acetone and bleaching powder is 75%, then what mass of acetone is required for producing 30 g of chloroform?
Options
A.40 g
B.19.4 g
C.10.92 g
D.14.56 g
Solution
$2CH_{3}COCH_{3} + 6Ca(OCl)Cl\overset{\quad 75\%\quad}{\rightarrow}2CHCl_{3} + \left( CH_{3}COO \right)_{2}Ca + 3CaCl_{2} + 2Ca(OH)_{2}$
2 × 58 g 2 × 119.5 g
∴ For 30 g CHCl3, mass of CH3COCH3 needed = $\frac{2 \times 58}{2 \times 119.5} \times 30 \times \frac{100}{75} = 19.4\text{ g}$
