Question
A photon of 400 nm is absorbed by a gas molecule and then the molecule re-emits two photons. One re-emitted photon has wavelength 500 nm. Assuming that there is no change in the energy of molecule, the wavelength of second re-emitted photon is
Options
A.100 nm
B.2000 nm
C.–100 nm
D.900 nm
Solution
$E = E_{1} + E_{2} \Rightarrow \frac{hc}{\lambda} = \frac{hc}{\lambda_{1}} + \frac{hc}{\lambda_{2}}$
Or, $\frac{1}{400} = \frac{1}{500} + \frac{1}{\lambda_{2}} \Rightarrow \lambda_{2} = 2000\text{ nm}$
