Chemical Kinetics and Nuclear ChemistryHard

Question

X-Rays are emitted during

Options

A.α, n reaction
B.K-capture
C.n, α reaction
D.β - emission.

Solution

X-Rays are emoted during K-capture. In this process an electron from the shellclosest to the nucleus is captured. Since closest shell is K-Shell, The process is called K-electron capture. An e- from a higher energy level drops back to fill the vacancy in the K-shell and characteristic X-radiations are emitted.
Note: Electron capture is not common. It occures in nuclei where the n/p ratio is low and the nucleus has insufficient energy for position emission.
        11p + o-1e → 10n + v
