Hydrogen and its compoundHard

Question

Among the following ions which one has the highest paramagnetism ?

Options

A.[Cr(H2O)6]3+
B.[Fe(H2O)6]2+
C.[Cu(H2O)6]2+
D.[Zn(H2O)6]2+

Solution

In thase aqua complexes, the metal ions present are Cr3+, Fe2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+ . Their E.C. are as folloes.
Cr3+ : [Ar]3d3, 4s0 n = 3
Fe2+ : [Ar]3d4, 4s0 n = 4
Cu2+ : [Ar]3d9, 4s0 n = 1
Zn2+ : [Ar]3d10, 4s0 n = 0
In the order the increasing number of unpaired electrons, the increasing order of paramagnetic sharacter is :
[Zn(H2O)6]2+ < [Cu(H2O)6]2+ < [Cr(H2O)6]3+ < [Fe(H2O)6]2+
