Question

500 c.c of a hydrocarbon (gas) was burnt in excess of oxygen yields 2500 cc of CO2 and 3 litres of H2O vapours (gas), all the vapour being measured at the same temperature and pressure, then

Options

A.Hydrocarbon is C5H10
B.Hydrocarbon is C5H12
C.Vapour density of hydrocarbon with respect to methane is 4.5
D.molar mass of the hydrocarbon is 70

Solution

Hydrocarbon → CO2   +  H2O
    0.5 litre            2.5 litre    3 litre
    0.5 mole          2.5 mole    3 mole
    1 mole              5 mole    6 mole
moles of C in CO2  = 1 × mole of CO2  = 1 × 5
mole of H in H2O = 2 × moles of H2O = 2 × 6 = 12
i.e molecular formula is C5 H12
Ans. 72 gm
