NEET Ecology: Complete Guide to Organisms, Ecosystems & Biodiversity
Ecology is one of the most reliable scoring chapters in NEET Biology — 10-12 questions, mostly factual, directly from NCERT. If you study these chapters systematically, they are near-guaranteed marks.
Organisms and Populations (3-4 questions)
Population attributes: natality, mortality, age distribution, sex ratio. Population growth: exponential (J-curve) and logistic (S-curve), carrying capacity (K). Interspecific interactions: mutualism, commensalism, predation, competition, parasitism, amensalism. Population regulation: density-dependent and density-independent factors.
Ecosystem Structure and Function (3-4 questions)
Producers, consumers (primary, secondary, tertiary), decomposers. Food chains, food webs, trophic levels. Energy flow: 10% law (Lindeman). Ecological pyramids (number, biomass, energy — inverted pyramid examples). Nutrient cycles: nitrogen cycle, carbon cycle key steps.
Biodiversity and Conservation (3-4 questions)
Levels of biodiversity: genetic, species, ecosystem. Alpha, beta, gamma diversity. Biodiversity hotspots in India (Western Ghats, Himalayas, Indo-Burma). Threats: habitat loss, poaching, alien invasive species, overexploitation. Conservation: in-situ (biosphere reserves, national parks, sanctuaries) and ex-situ (zoos, seed banks, botanical gardens).
Environmental Issues (2-3 questions)
Air pollution: sources, effects, control. Water pollution: BOD, eutrophication, Biomagnification (DDT example). Soil pollution: solid waste management, biomagnification. Ozone depletion: UV-B effects, Montreal Protocol. Global warming: greenhouse gases, effects, Kyoto Protocol. Noise pollution effects.
Ecology Study Tips
For Ecology, create ONE-PAGE summary tables: Population interactions (table: interaction type → both affected +/-). Nutrient cycles (table: key transformation steps → organisms involved). Biodiversity conservation (in-situ vs ex-situ examples). These tables make revision fast and effective.
