Question
A transverse wave is travelling along a long stretched string from left to right (along +ve x direction). The snapshot of a small part of the string at any moment t is shown in the figure. At this particular instant :
Options
A.A and E are at rest for a moment while C and G have maximum speed
B.B and D have upward velocity whereas F and H have downward
C.D, E, F are moving downward at that moment
D.B and H are moving downward at that moment
Solution
[Key Concept: For a wave moving in +x, particle velocity is −v times the local slope of the string.]
Step 1: vparticle = −vwave(slope) for a wave moving along +x.
Step 2: B and H lie on rising (positive-slope) parts, so they move downward; D, E and F lie on the falling part and move upward.
Step 3: C and G (crest, trough) are momentarily at rest, while A and E (zero crossings) move fastest. Only Option D is correct.
