Question

Three identical p-n junction diodes $D_{1},D_{2}$, and $D_{3}$ are connected across a battery as shown in the figure. If the width of the depletion regions of $D_{1},D_{2}$ and $D_{3}$ are $W_{1},W_{2}$ and $W_{3}$, respectively, then the correct option is:

Options

A.$W_{3} > W_{2} > W_{1}$
B.$W_{2} > W_{1} = W_{3}$
C.$W_{1} > W_{2} > W_{3}$
D.$W_{3} = W_{1} > W_{2}$

Solution

Sol. [Key Concept: Ideal-diode network — current flow]

$D_{1}$ is forward biased

Depletion region of forward bias ( $W_{1}$ ) will be minimum

$D_{3}$ is reverse biased

Depletion region of reverse bias $\left( W_{3} \right)$ will be maximum

$D_{2}$ is unbiased

Depletion region $\left( W_{2} \right)$ will be between $\left( W_{1} \right)$ and $\left( W_{3} \right)$

Correct relation will be given as

$$W_{3} > W_{2} > W_{1}$$
