Question

Given below are two statements :

Statement-I : Heating NaCl with concentrated $H_{2}{SO}_{4}$ and ${MnO}_{2}$ results in oxidation of Mn.

Statement-II : Heating Nal with concentrated $H_{2}{SO}_{4}$ and ${MnO}_{2}$ results in reduction of Mn.

In light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below.

Options

A.Statement-I is correct but Statement-II is incorrect
B.Statement-I is incorrect but Statement-II is correct
C.Both Statement-I and Statement-II are correct
D.Both Statement-I and Statement-II are incorrect

Solution

Sol. [Key Concept: Reactions of halides with concentrated H₂SO₄]

Statement-I: (False)

$$2NaCl + \overset{+ 4}{{MnO}_{2}} + 2H_{2}{SO}_{4} \rightarrow {Na}_{2}{SO}_{4} + \overset{+ 2}{{MnSO}_{4}} + 2H_{2}O + {Cl}_{2}$$

So, reduction of Mn is taking place.

Statement-II: (True)

$$2NaI + \overset{+ 4}{{MnO}_{2}} + 2H_{2}{SO}_{4} \rightarrow {Na}_{2}{SO}_{4} + \overset{+ 2}{{MnSO}_{4}} + I_{2} + 2H_{2}O$$

So, Mn has undergone reduction.
