Question
A bob of heavy mass $m$ is suspended by a light string of length $I$. The bob is given a horizontal velocity $v_{0}$ as shown in figure. If the string gets slack at some point $P$ making an angle $\theta$ from the horizontal, the ratio of the speed $v$ of the bob at point $P$ to its initial speed $v_{0}$ is:
Options
Solution
At Point $P,mgsin\theta = \frac{mv^{2}}{l}$
By conservation of mechanical energy at point $P \in Q$
$$\begin{matrix} & \frac{1}{2}mv_{0}^{2} = \frac{1}{2}mv^{2} + mg(I + Isin\theta) \\ & \frac{v_{0}^{2}}{2} = \frac{v^{2}}{2} + gl(1 + sin\theta) \end{matrix}$$
Put $gl = \frac{v^{2}}{sin\theta}$ using (1)
$$\begin{matrix} & \frac{v_{0}^{2}}{2} = \frac{v^{2}}{2} + \frac{v^{2}}{sin\theta}(1 + sin\theta) \\ & \frac{v_{0}^{2}}{2} = \frac{v^{2}}{2} + \frac{v^{2}}{sin\theta} + v^{2} \\ & \frac{v_{0}^{2}}{2} = \frac{3}{2}v^{2} + \frac{2v^{2}}{2sin\theta} \\ & v_{0}^{2} = v^{2}\left\lbrack 3 + \frac{2}{sin\theta} \right\rbrack \\ & \frac{v}{v_{0}} = \left( \frac{sin\theta}{3sin\theta + 2} \right)^{\frac{1}{2}} \end{matrix}$$
