Question
In males of grasshoppers and moths there are two pairs of autosomes and one
Options
A.X only
B.X and Y
C.Y only
D.None of these
Solution
Sol.(a) [Key Concept: Sex Determination — Grasshopper XO System] In males of grasshoppers and moths (and some other insects), there is only ONE X chromosome and NO Y chromosome (XO system). Males produce sperm of two types: those with X chromosome and those WITHOUT any sex chromosome (O). Females are XX (two X chromosomes). When an X-bearing sperm fertilises the egg → XX (female); when O-bearing sperm fertilises → XO (male). This is the XO/XX sex determination system.
