Question
Mutations can be induced with:
Options
A.infra red radiations
B.IAA
C.ethylene
D.gamma radiations
Solution
Sol.(d) [Key Concept: Mutagens — Gamma Radiation] Mutations can be induced by GAMMA RADIATIONS (ionising radiation). Gamma rays cause DNA damage including base modifications, strand breaks, and chromosomal aberrations. H.J. Muller (1927) first showed that X-rays (ionising radiation) dramatically increase mutation rates in Drosophila. Gamma rays are even more powerful mutagens. Infrared radiation (non-ionising) has insufficient energy to cause mutations. IAA and ethylene are plant hormones, not mutagens.
