Chemical BondingHard

Question

Given below are two statements:

Statement I: The correct order in terms of bond dissociation enthalpy is ${Cl}_{2} > {Br}_{2} > F_{2} > I_{2}$

Statement II : The correct trend in the covalent character of the metal halides is $\left\lbrack {SnCl}_{4} > {SnCl}_{2} \right\rbrack$, $\left\lbrack {PbCl}_{4} > {PbCl}_{2} \right\rbrack$ and $\left\lbrack {UF}_{4} > {UF}_{6} \right\rbrack$

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

Options

A.Statement I is true but Statement II is false
B.Both Statement I and Statement II are true
C.Statement I is false but Statement II is true
D.Both Statement I and Statement II are false

Solution

Statement-I :

Bond energy order is ${Cl}_{2} > {Br}_{2} > F_{2} > I_{2}$

Bond energy increases with increase in bond order.

Statement-II

Correct order of covalent character

According to the Fajan's rule, higher the charge on cation, greater is the covalent character.

${PbCl}_{2} < {PbCl}_{4}$,

${UF}_{6} > {UF}_{4}$,

$${SnCl}_{4} > {SnCl}_{2}$$
