Question
The sublimation temperature of a substance is −83°C. It exists as cubic close packed structure with unit cell edge length of 5.0 Å and density $\frac{8}{3}$g/cm3 at −100°C. What should be the density of substance at 0°C and 1 atm? (NA = 6 × 1023)
Options
A.50 g/cm3
B.2.23 g/cm3
C.2.23 g/L
D.1.86 g/L
Solution
$d = \frac{Z.M}{N_{A}.V} \Rightarrow \frac{8}{3} = \frac{4 \times M}{\left( 6 \times 10^{23} \right) \times \left( 5 \times 10^{- 8} \right)^{3}}$
⇒ M = 50 gm/mol
At 0°C, the substance will exist as gas and its density $= \frac{50\text{ gm}}{22.4\text{ L}} = 2.23\text{ g/L}$
