Question
How many grams of NaOH should be added in 500 ml of 2 M acetic acid solution to get a buffer solution of maximum buffer capacity?
Options
A.20.0
B.10.0
C.40.0
D.30.0
Solution
For maximum buffer capacity:
$\frac{\lbrack ACOH\rbrack}{\lbrack NaOH\rbrack} = \frac{2}{1} \Rightarrow \lbrack NaOH\rbrack = \frac{2\text{ M}}{2} = 1\text{ M}$
∴ Mass of NaOH added = $\frac{500 \times 1}{1000} \times 40 = 20\text{ gm}$
