Question
The dissociation constant of acetic acid is 0.000018 and that for cyano acetic acid is 0.0036 at 298 K. What would be the ratio of volumes of the two acid solutions, each containing equal moles of the acids, so that the solutions becomes isohydric?
Options
A.1: 1
B.1: $\sqrt{200}$
C.1: 200
D.200: 1
Solution
$\left\lbrack H^{+} \right\rbrack_{CH_{3}COOH} = \left\lbrack H^{+} \right\rbrack_{CH_{2}(CN)COOH}$
Or, $\sqrt{0.000018 \times \frac{n}{V_{1}}} = \sqrt{0.0036 \times \frac{n}{V_{2}}} \Rightarrow \frac{V_{1}}{V_{2}} = \frac{1}{200}$
