Question

A mixture of 2.3 g formic acid and 4.5 g oxalic acid is treated with conc. H2SO4. The evolved gaseous mixture is passed through KOH pellets. Weight (in g) of the remaining product at STP will be

Options

A.

1.4

B.

3.0

C.

2.8

D.

4.4

Solution

HCOOH→Dehydrating AgentH2SO4CO + H2OH2O abosrbed by H2SO4
molesi=2.346=120      0          0(moles)f      0                      120      120
H2C2O4→H2SO4CO+ CO2+H2O
[H2O absorbed by H2SO4]
(moles)f        0         120     120       120
CO2 is absorbed by KOH.
So the remaning product is only CO.
moles of CO formed from both reactions
=120+120=110
Left mass of CO = moles × molar mass
=110×28
= 2.8 g Ans.
