Momentum and CollisionHard
Question
Water from a tap emerges vertically downwards with an initinal speed of 1.0 m/s. The cross section area of tap is 10-4m2. Assume that pressure is constant throughout the stream of water and that the flow is steady, the cross-sectional area of stream 0.15 m below tha tap is
Options
A.5.0 × 10-4 m2
B.1.0 × 10-4 m2
C.5.0 × 10-5 m2
D.2.0 × 10-5 m2
Solution

From conservation of energy
V22 = V12 + 2gh ......(i)
[can also be found by applying Bernouli′s theorem]
From continuity equation
A1v1 = A2v2
.......(ii) Substituting value of v2 from Eq.(ii) in Eq.(i)
. v12 = v12 + 2gh or

∴

Substituting the given values

A2 = 5.0 × 10-5m2.
