Question
When a mixture consisting of 10 moles of SO2 and 16 moles of O2 were passed over a catalyst, 8 mole of SO3 were fomed at equilibrium. The number of moles of SO2 and O2 which did not enter into reaction were
Options
A.2, 12
B.12, 2
C.3, 10
D.10, 3
Solution
This application of mole concept will be discussed in chemical equilibrium chapter
2SO2 (g) + O2 (g) ⇋ 2SO3 (g)
At t = 0 10 16 0
At equilibrium (10 - 2x) (16 - x) 2x = 8
2x = 8
x = 4
Thus, number of moles of SO2 unreacted is 10 - 2x = 2
∴ Number of moles of O2 unreacted
= 16 - x = 12
2SO2 (g) + O2 (g) ⇋ 2SO3 (g)
At t = 0 10 16 0
At equilibrium (10 - 2x) (16 - x) 2x = 8
2x = 8
x = 4
Thus, number of moles of SO2 unreacted is 10 - 2x = 2
∴ Number of moles of O2 unreacted
= 16 - x = 12
