Question

A disk A of radius r moving on perfectly smooth surface at a speed v undergoes an elastic collision with an identical stationary disk B. Find the velocity of the disk B after collision if the impact parameter is r/2 as shown in the figure.

Options

A.$\frac{\sqrt{15}}{4}v$
B.$\frac{v}{4}$
C.$\frac{v}{2}$
D.$\frac{\sqrt{3}v}{2}$

Solution

Sol. Masses are equal and elastic collision.

$\sin\theta = \frac{\left( \frac{r}{2} \right)}{2r} = \frac{1}{4}$

⇒   $\cos\theta = \frac{\sqrt{15}}{4}$

⇒ velocity will be interchanged along line of collision.

velocity of A along LOC = v cos θ = $v\frac{\sqrt{15}}{4}$

= this velocity will be given to B.
