Question
A double convex lens, made of a material of refractive index μ1, is placed inside two liquids of refractive indices μ2 and μ3, as shown μ2 > μ1 > μ3. A wide, parallel beam of light is incident on the lens from the left. The lens will give rise to : -

Options
A.a single convergent beam
B.two different convergent breams
C.two differ divergent beams
D.a convergent and a divergent beam
Solution
As given u2 > u1 > u3
∵ u2 > u1 ⇒ lens act as a concave lens upper half portion of lens & u3 < u1
⇒ Lower half portion act as a convex lens.
∵ u2 > u1 ⇒ lens act as a concave lens upper half portion of lens & u3 < u1
⇒ Lower half portion act as a convex lens.
