Nuclear Physics and RadioactivityHard
Question
Two radiactive nuclie P and Q in a given sample decay into stable nucleus R. At time t = 0,number of P species are 4N0 and that of Q are N0. Half life of P (for conservation to R)is 1 minute where as thatof Q is 2 minute. Initially there are no nuclie of R present in thesample. When number of nuclie of P and Q are equal, the number of nuclie of R present inthe sample would be
Options
A.2 N0
B.3 N0
C.

D.

Solution

Let after t min the number of nuclei of P and Q are equal
∴ Np = 4N0
and NQ = N0
As NP = NQ
∴ 4N0
= N0
or 4 = 2t/2 or 22 = 2t/2
or
= 2 or t = 4 minAfter 4 minutes, both P and Q have equal number of nuclei
∴ number of nuclei of R
