Heat and Thermal ExpansionHard
Question
During the melting of a slab of ice at 273 K at atmosphere pressure : -
Options
A.Positive work is done by the ice - water system on the atmosphere.
B.Positive work is done on the ice water system by the atmosphere.
C.The internal energy of ice - water system increase.
D.The internal energy of the ice - water system decreases.
Solution
Q = ᐃU + W
Q = + ve, as heat is absorbed from the atmosphere
W= - ve as the volume decrease
∴ ᐃU = Q - W = + ve - (-ve) = +ve
∴ internal energy increase.
Q = + ve, as heat is absorbed from the atmosphere
W= - ve as the volume decrease
∴ ᐃU = Q - W = + ve - (-ve) = +ve
∴ internal energy increase.
