Magnetic field due to currentMedium

Question

A current $i = 2amp$ is established through the long straight conductors which are the arms of a hairpin-like structure placed in the plane of paper as shown in the figure. Knowing that a current carrying conductor produces magnetic field represented by the lines of force, analyze the situations described.

The correct option

Options

A.The magnetic field at point P is directed outward, normal to the plane of paper
B.The magnetic field at point Q is directed inward, normal to the plane of paper
C.The magnetic field at point Z is directed normal to the line PQ in the plane of paper
D.No magnetic field is produced outside the hair pin that is at points M & N

Solution

Sol. Key concept: Direction of magnetic field from a current-carrying wire.

In the upper arm, current flows to the left; in the lower arm it flows to the right. Apply the right-hand thumb rule separately to both arms. At a point between the arms, each straight section produces a field out of the page.

The current around the left-hand bend is counterclockwise as viewed, so the bend also produces an outward field on its inner side. Therefore, the field at P is outward, normal to the page. The fields at Q and Z are also normal to the page, and the external field is not identically zero. Only a is correct.
