Question

The total number of moles of ${NaHCO}_{3}$ consumed during the given reaction is x.

The value of x is

Options

A.1
B.2
C.3
D.4

Solution

Sol. Key concept: Bicarbonate consumes acidic protons that can liberate carbon dioxide.

The molecule contains one sulfonic-acid group (–SO₃H) and one carboxylic-acid group (–COOH). Each reacts with one mole of NaHCO₃, forming its sodium salt, water and carbon dioxide.

The phenolic –OH and terminal alkyne C–H are not acidic enough to be quantitatively neutralised by bicarbonate in this test. Therefore only two acidic protons are counted.

$$x = 1 + 1 = 2$$

Hence option (b).
