Question
During the preparation of Mohr's salt solution (Ferrous ammonium sulphate), which of the following acid is added to prevent hydrolysis of ${Fe}^{2 +}$ ion?
Options
A.dilute nitric acid
B.dilute sulphuric acid
C.dilute hydrochloric acid
D.concentrated sulphuric acid
Solution
Sol. [Key Concept: Acidification of Mohr salt solution]
Dilute H₂SO₄ supplies H⁺ and suppresses hydrolysis of Fe²⁺ in the Mohr salt solution. Sulphate is also compatible with the salt, (NH₄)₂Fe(SO₄)₂·6H₂O. Nitric acid is unsuitable because it can oxidise Fe²⁺. Hence, option (2).
