Question
Given below are two statements:
Statement I: The boiling point of hydrides of Group 16 elements follow the order
$H_{2}O > H_{2}Te > H_{2}Se > H_{2}\text{ }S$.
Statement II: On the basis of molecular mass, $H_{2}O$ is expected to have lower boiling point than the other members of the group but due to the presence of extensive H -bonding in $H_{2}O$, it has higher boiling point.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:

Solution
Sol. [Key Concept: Boiling points of Group 16 hydrides]
Both statements are true. H₂O has an unusually high boiling point because of extensive intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Among H₂S, H₂Se and H₂Te, increasing size and polarisability strengthen dispersion attractions down the group.
The overall order is H₂O > H₂Te > H₂Se > H₂S, option (3).
