Question
Which one of the following alcohols reacts instantaneously with Lucas reagent?
Options
A.
B.
C.${CH}_{3} - {CH}_{2} - {CH}_{2} - {CH}_{2}OH$
D.
Solution
Sol. [Key Concept: Lucas test for alcohols]
Option (2) is tert-butyl alcohol, (CH₃)₃COH, a tertiary alcohol. With Lucas reagent, concentrated HCl and anhydrous ZnCl₂, it rapidly forms tert-butyl chloride. The insoluble alkyl chloride causes immediate turbidity. The other listed alcohols are primary or secondary and react more slowly under the usual test conditions.
