Respiration in PlantsMedium
Question
$2\left( C_{51}H_{98}C_{6} \right) + 145O_{2} \rightarrow 102{CO}_{2} + 98H_{2}O +$ energy
The Respiratory Quotient (RQ) of a biomolecule used for respiration, as per the above equation would be :
Options
A.Between 0.5 and 0.95
B.Less than 0.5
C.1.0
D.Between 1.25 and 2
Solution
Sol. [Key Concept: Respiration — oxidation of substrate (respiratory quotient)]
$R.Q = \frac{\text{~}\text{Volume of}\text{~}{CO}_{2}\text{~}\text{evolved}\text{~}}{\text{~}\text{Volume of}\text{~}O_{2}\text{~}\text{consumed}\text{~}}$
As per the given equation,
$$2\left( C_{51}H_{98}O_{6} \right) + 145O_{2} \rightarrow 102{CO}_{2} + 98H_{2}O + \text{~}\text{Energy}\text{~}$$
Hence the RQ can be calculated as,
$$R \cdot Q = \frac{102}{145} = 0.7$$
This value lies between 0.5 and 0.95.
