Question
Given below are two statements:
Statement I : Ferromagnetism is considered as an extreme form of Para magnetism.
Statement II : The number of unpaired electrons in a ${Cr}^{2 +}$ ion $(Z = 24)$ is the same as that of a ${Nd}^{3 +}$ ion $(Z = 60)$.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
Options
Solution
Sol. [Key Concept: Assertion–Reason — ferromagnetism as an extreme form of paramagnetism; unpaired electrons] Substances which are attracted very strongly in applied magnetic field are termed as ferromagnetic. In fact, ferromagnetism is an extreme form of para magnetism.
Hence statement I is correct.
$${Cr}^{2 +} = 3{\text{ }d}^{4}4{\text{ }s}^{0} $$Unpaired electrons = 4
$${Nd}^{3 +} = 4f^{3}6{\text{ }s}^{0} $$Unpaired electrons $= 3$
Hence, Statement II is incorrect
