Question

Multiple alleles are present: [NEET 2015 RS]

Options

A.At different loci on the same chromosome
B.At the same locus of the chromosome
C.On non-sister chromatids
D.On different chromosomes

Solution

Sol.(b) [Key Concept: Multiple Alleles — Same Locus] Multiple alleles are present AT THE SAME LOCUS on the chromosome — they are alternative forms of the same gene occupying the same position on homologous chromosomes. In any diploid individual, only 2 of the multiple alleles can be present (one on each homologue), but in a POPULATION, 3 or more alleles may exist for that locus. Example: ABO blood group has 3 alleles (I^A, I^B, i) all at the same locus on chromosome 9.
