Question

Which of the following statements is/are correct regarding inter-halogen compounds of ABx types?

Options

A.x may be 1,3,5 and 7
B.A is a more electronegative halogen than B
C.FBr3 cannot exit
D.The interhalogens are generally more reactive than the halogens (except F2) due to weaker A–X bonds compared to X–X bond.

Solution

Sol. The halogens react with each other to form interhalogen compounds. The general formula of most interhalogen compounds is AXn, where n = 1, 3, 5 or 7, and A is the less electronegative of the two halogens. The compounds which are formed by the union of two different halogens are called inter halogen compounds. There are never more than two types of halogens in a interhalogen molecule, which are of 4-types.

AX - type : ClF, BrF, BrCl, ICl, IBr

AX3 - type: ClF3, BrF3,

AX5 - type: ClF5, BrF5, IF5,

AX7 - type: IF7

FBr3 is not known because F is more electronegative than Br which is against the condition for formation of interhalogen compounds.
