Question
Which of the following statements is/are correct regarding B2H6?
Options
A.banana bonds are longer but stronger than normal B–H bonds
B.B2H6 is also known as 3c–2e compound
C.the hybrid state of B in B2H6 is sp3 while that of sp2 in BH3
D.it cannot be prepared by reacting BF3 with LiBH3 in the presence of dry ether
Solution
Sol. B2H6 has banana bonds which are 3c−2e (3 center 2 electron) bonds. These bonds are longer but stronger than normal B−H bonds. The hybrid state in B2H6 is sp3 while that of sp2 in BH3. This can be shown from figure. When BF3 reacts with LiBH4 in the presence of dry ether diborane is the product as shown in reaction. 8BF3 + 6LiBH4 → B2H6 + 6LiBF4
