Question
If the tension in a stretched string fixed at both ends is changed by 20%, the fundamental frequency is found to increase by 15Hz. then the
Options
A.original frequency is 157 Hz
B.velocity of propagation of the transverse wave along the string changes by 5%
C.velocity of propagation of the transverse wave along the string changes by 10%.
D.fundamental wave length on the string does not change.
Solution
Sol. v = $\sqrt{\frac{T}{\mu}}$
v' = $\sqrt{\frac{1.2T}{\mu}}$ = v$\sqrt{1.2}$ = 1.095 v≅ 1.1 v
f0 = $\frac{v}{2L}$
f0' = 1.095 f0
⇒∆f = 0.095 f0
For fundamental mode
L = $\frac{\lambda}{2}$
⇒λ = 2L, L does not change, hence λ
