Question
Which of the following statements are wrong about the velocity of sound in air:
Options
A.decreases with increases in temperature
B.increases with decrease in temperature
C.decreases as humidity increases
D.independent of density of air
Solution
Sol. v = $\sqrt{\frac{\gamma RT}{M}}$
T↑ ⇒ v↑
As humidity increases, H2O increases (M = 18).
The molecular mass of dry air is close to that of N2 & O2 i.e. b/w 28 & 32.
Hence humidity lowers the Avg. molecular mass of air.
Hence velocity of sound increases.
