Question

Given below are two statements :

Statement-I : Element ' X ' and $\ 'Y$ ' are the most and least electronegative elements, respectively among $N,As,Sb$ and P . The nature of the oxides $X_{2}O_{3}$ and $Y_{2}O_{3}$ is acidic and amphoteric, respectively.

Statement-II : ${BCl}_{3}$ is covalent in nature and gets hydrolysed in water. It produces $\left\lbrack B(OH)_{4} \right\rbrack^{-}$and $\left\lbrack B\left( H_{2}O \right)_{6} \right\rbrack^{3 +}$ in aqueous medium.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

Options

A.Both Statement-I and Statement-II are true.
B.Statement-I is true but Statement-II is false.
C.Both Statement-I and Statement-II are false.
D.Statement-I is false but Statement-II is true.

Solution

Electronegativity order:

Most Least electronegative

$X = N\ X_{2}O_{3} = N_{2}O_{3}$ (Acidic)

$Y = Sb\ Y_{2}O_{3} = {Sb}_{2}O_{3}$ (Amphoteric)

Statement-I is true

$${BCl}_{3} + 3H_{2}O \rightarrow B(OH)_{3} + 3HCl $$Statement-II is false
