Question
Given below are two statements:
Statement I: Sucrose is dextrorotatory. However, sucrose upon hydrolysis gives a solution having mixture of products. This solution shows levorotation.
Statement II : Hydrolysis of sucrose gives glucose and fructose. Since the levorotation of glucose is more than the dextrorotation of fructose the resulting solution becomes levorotatory.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.
Options
Solution
(4) Statement I is true but Statement II is false.
Sol. $C_{12}H_{22}O_{11} + H_{2}O\overset{\phantom{HCl\ }}{\rightarrow}C_{6}H_{12}O_{6} + C_{6}H_{12}O_{6}$
D- Glucose + D fructose
$\lbrack\alpha\rbrack_{\text{D-sucrose~}} = + {66.5}^{\circ},\lbrack\alpha\rbrack_{\text{D-Glucose~}} = + {52.5}^{\circ}$,
$$\lbrack\alpha\rbrack_{\text{D-Fructose~}} = - {92.4}^{\circ} $$⇒ Sucrose is dextrorotatory and hydrolysed product is laevorotatory.
