Question
On heating a mixture of common salt and $K_{2}{Cr}_{2}O_{7}$ in equal amount along with concentrated $H_{2}{SO}_{4}$ in a test tube, a gas is evolved. Formula of the gas evolved and oxidation state of the central metal atom in the gas respectively are :
Options
A.${CrO}_{2}{Cl}_{2}$ and +5
B.${CrO}_{2}{Cl}_{2}$ and +6
C.${Cr}_{2}O_{2}{Cl}_{2}$ and +6
D.${Cr}_{2}O_{2}{Cl}_{2}$ and +3
Solution
$4NaCl + K_{2}{Cr}_{2}O_{7} + 6H_{2}{SO}_{4} \longrightarrow 2{KHSO}_{4} + 2{CrO}_{2}{Cl}_{2} + 4{NaHSO}_{4} + 3H_{2}O $ (Chromyl chloride)
In Chromyl chloride Cr is in +6 oxidation state.
